the boy
had been drafted
and was preparing
to be sent
overseas
to die

as he packed
he waited
on the call
from his mother
to assure him
of her prayers
for his safe return
and to remind him 
of her love

but the call
from his mother
never came
before the boy
went overseas
and died
in battle

when asked
about not speaking
to her only son
before he was sent
overseas
to die
she said
she waited
and waited
for him to call
before going overseas
to die
to let her know
he couldn't be sent off
to die
without 
first
letting her know
how much he loved her

now
every night
she weeps and mourns
herself
to sleep
cause there's nobody left
since her only son 
died
on the battlefield
alone
and afraid
