i found a stray dog
mangy
emaciated
and mean

i coaxed him
into trust
then mended him
at great expense
with food
medicines
shots 
and salves

after he mended
i forced him
to beg
for his food
and do tricks
before being let out
otherwise
take a beating
or go a little hungry
for pissing
on the floor
or refusing to grovel
figuring
the begging and tricks
weren't too much to ask
for saving
him

the dog
grew old
weary and tired 
of tricks and begging
and when i couldn't 
beat or starve them 
out of him 
anymore
i made him
a stray again
and found another
hapless
helpless
hopeless 
homeless mutt
to save
