The Matrix

The Matrix

we live
in the matrix
of our worn-out
understandings
of what we
and the world
are

we live
we define ourselves
we define everything
inside
the aged
and antiquated scripts
of
Shane
The Ten Commandments
and
The Sound of Music
when the world
in which we live
is now
Midnight and Drugstore Cowboy
Taxi Driver
and
Bad Lieutenant

we have not
adapted
the tales which define us
to suit
our modern world
so
we feel trapped
inside something
like
The Matrix
when
in fact
the simulation
of our lives
are the scripts
of
arguably great
yet
terribly
dated
films
through which
we live
and
we remain
terribly
stuck

though great
our classic films
have grown old
we have outlived
and outgrown
Shane
and
The Ten Commandment
yet
we fear
rightly
the adoption
of new scripts
afraid
rightly
that
The Bad Lieutenant
we adopt
may be
Herzog and Cage
instead of
Ferrera and Keitel

so we remain
stuck and anxious
in the matrix
the paradox
of a digital age
where and when
Cecil B. DeMille
Charlton Heston
VistaVision and Technicolor
are still
tops
