Kitten

i came home
to the frail
frightened
bawling
kitten
curled up 
and abandoned
at my doorstep

i came home
to the surprise
of the crying
puny
shivering
kitten
in desperate need
of saving

i took it in
gave it a name
and nursed it
to health
giving it attention
for its lifetime
as it grew
into a healthy
loving cat

throughout our years
Buttons
gave me great joy
in our companionship
so much joy
there was little need
to leave our home
anymore

we lived
Buttons and i
serenely
in our home
until she got old
and finally
passed

now i live
without the joy
of a companion
my loneliness
growing
throughout the years
as i wait
and wait
in crippling despair
for a new kitten
my karmic reward
for saving Buttons
to be delivered
to my doorstep
just like
before
