Short End of the Stick

Short End of the Stick

she got the short end of the stick
      because her father wasn't there
she got the short end of the stick
      because some of the girls
           were cuter than her
she got the short end of the stick
      because she was mama's princess
           turned bully
she got the short end of the stick
      because she needed glasses
she got the short end of the stick
      because she had more brains
          than looks
she got the short end of the stick
      because her husband left
she got the short end of the stick
      because no other man
           decided to love her
she got the short end of the stick
      by being more stingy
          than generous
she got the short end of the stick
      because her jobs
           never recognized her talents
and her children
gave her the short end of the stick
          by not revering her
               nearly as much
                    as she pretended to revere
                         her own mother
her children
gave her the short end of the stick
by asking where she wanted to go
and what she wanted to do
                    instead of them
                         deciding those things
                              for her
so he tells them
they give her the short end of the stick
          a heartless thing to do
               after a lifetime of it
so they don't call anymore
     and don't stop by anymore
that's how
they give her the short end of the stick
               too
 without understanding
      for her
           there's nowhere to go
                and nothing else to do
                     but sit and talk
                          of all the ways
she's been given the short end of the stick
without understanding
     she cannot be anything else
          it's far too late
               defined for so long
                    it can't make sense
                         to be anything else
